Arrest of ex-minister’s son yields large haul of illegal items
The son of a former sports minister arrested two days ago for
possession of illegal drugs and unlicensed guns sank deeper into trouble
after police recovered more guns, ammunition and suspected stimulant
tablets at his company-owned hotel, office and residence in Yangon,
officials said Tuesday.
U Phyo Ko Ko Tint San, chairman of the Ace Group of Companies which
owns and operates the Hotel ACE chain and son of former sports minister U
Tint San, had been detained by police along with two companions after
they were caught carrying unlicensed firearms and a small amount of
illegal drugs at Nay Pyi Taw airport on Sunday.
Subsequent police search at Hotel ACE in Nay Pyi Taw where the three have stayed before heading to the airport, also yielded more guns, ammunition and drugs.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said on Tuesday that a follow up police operation at the Hotel ACE in Yangon early Monday also yielded suspected contraband.
Among the things seized by police operatives at Hotel ACE in Thaketa, Yangon were six pink stimulant tablets, five walkie-talkies, five drones, 29-mm bullets, 12 bullet-proof jackets and two NSC-labeled jackets, binoculars and one US-made gun.
Police also recovered from the suspect’s office two stimulant tablets, one gun bolster, one lens, one long-range gun and one walkie-talkie, among others.
Ko Aung Tun Win, a resident living near the Hotel ACE in Thaketa, Yangon, noted some suspicious activities in the hotel premises at night.
“There are benches in front of the hotel and many boys and girls come to this place at night. We don’t know what they are doing but they are not in normal state. They look like using drugs,” he said. “The hotel doesn’t have many guests. Drug abuse is quite common among the young people here.”
In another search conducted at the house of the suspect in Bahan township, also in Yangon, police seized three pieces of 5.56-mm bullets, a guerilla uniform with Phyo Ko Ko Tint San’s name on it and national emblem, two sniper lenses, one compass, one walkie-talkie and two stimulant tablets, among others, the home affairs ministry said.
The Home Affairs Deputy Minister Major General Aung Soe said on Tuesday police are now focusing on other persons who might be involved in the illegal activities.
“We have prioritised in arresting all links and seizing other weapons as soon as possible,” he told the media on the sidelines of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw meeting.
The ministry has also carried out inspections at all remaining businesses of U Phyo Ko Ko Tint San and has coordinated its efforts with other all concerned ministries, Major General Aung Soe said.
