Ancient dugout canoe unearthed in Nay Pyi Taw

An ancient dugout canoe was discovered in Palwe Chaung in Lewe township, Nay Pyi Taw, on September 29,  according to local residents.
The canoe is more than 58 feet long and weighs 10 tonnes.
It was buried 6 ft deep below the Palwe Chaung. When the river rose, the bank collapsed and a villager discovered the tip of the canoe while diving.

The weight and dimension of the canoe made it difficult for the excavation and transporting the bulky structure.

“We were lucky that the water level was high. A lot of people, and 12 bulls were needed to unearth it from beneath the river. When it reached the land, we had to use an elephant and a tractor to pull it,” said U Arsaya, residing monk of the Potebaryone monastery, where the boat is currently being kept.

In the past, several ancient boats were discovered around the Palwe Chaung but the latest discovery was the largest of all.

“This is the largest boat. The previously discovered ones were not as big as this,” said U Khin Zaw, a local resident who helped with the excavation.

The ancient boat has been delivered to the monastery on October 7, where it will be maintained and showcased to the public, said U Arsaya.
